God's Friends

Next Page >

The saints are people who loved God so much that they tried very hard to be good so they could go and live with Him when they died. The saints are God's friends, and they are your friends, too. Here are some stories and activates about your heavenly friends, the saints. Before they grew up, they were children, just like you. You can click on some of the pictures and diagrams to make them larger so you can print and color or use them. I hope these saints will remind you how much Jesus loved the little children.

Saint John Bosco

John Bosco was a happy little Italian boy. He loved to play and have fun. He learned how to juggle balls in the air. When his friends wanted to see him do his tricks, John would perform if his friends would promise to go to church with him. When John grew up, he wanted to help the poor boys and girls of his town. He started schools to teach them how to make a good living when they grew up. He reminded them that God loves to see boys and girls being happy and having fun, as long as they don't commit sins. Today, John Bosco's friends the Salesians help boys and girls all over the world.

Blessed Miguel Pro

Miguel Pro was a very mischievous little Mexican boy. He loved to play jokes and funny tricks on people. He especially liked to tease his sister. Miguel loved his sister, though, and tried to help her whenever he could. One day her pet bird flew away. Miguel's sister was sad and crying. Without stopping to think that he might fall and be hurt, Miguel climbed on the roof of their house to catch his sister's pet. That made his sister happy again.

When Miguel grew up, he became a priest. He loved to help the people. They could not go to church because the government had made bad rules. Without thinking of the danger to himself, Miguel took the Blessed Sacrament to people in secret. When Miguel was caught, the soldiers shot him. Brave and good, Miguel forgave the soldiers for their sin and cried out "Long Live Christ the King."

You can make a little clay bird to remind you of Blessed Miguel. Birds can also remind us of our souls. Some day we want our souls to fly to God. Ask an adult to help you make the clay.

You will need: 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of salt, and 1/2 cup of water

Put the flower and salt in a bowl, gradually adding the water, stirring until the mixture forms a ball. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it for 7 to 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Use the dough like you would use clay.

Roll some dough out on a floured surface. If you have a bird shaped cookie cutter, use it to cut out your bird. If you don't have a bird cookie cutter, click on the bird above, print it and use it as a pattern to cut out your clay. Make a hole at the top of the bird's wing by punching a soda straw into the clay.

Put your bird on a cookie sheet covered with foil. Bake it in the oven at 300 degrees for about 30 minutes or until it turns brown. Put your bird on a wire rack to let it cool; let it dry overnight before you paint it.

Paint your bird with flowers in a cheerful Mexican design. When the paint is dry, spray your bird with several coats of clear acrylic spray to seal and protect it. Put a ribbon through the hole and hang your bird in front of a window or on your Christmas tree.

You probably have a lot of toys. But not all children have enough money for toys. The boys and girls John Bosco helped were poor, so they had to make their own toys.  Here is a simple toy you can make:

Ask your Mom for a large button. Put a string through two of the holes and ties knots at the end. Hold a knot in each of your hands and twirl the button around and around. When it is wound tightly, pull out on the string by opening your hands wider. The button will spin and dance for you. You can make a simple yoyo by sewing two buttons together, back to back. Tie a string between the buttons. Wind it up and spin it!

Saint Bernadette

Bernadette was a very very poor little girl who lived in France. She was sick a lot of the time with asthma. For a while, she lived with her cousins in the country because her family was too poor to keep her at home. At her cousin's house, Bernadette helped them take care of their sheep. She didn't get to go to school. Do you think she was sad? No, she was happy. She loved to tell jokes and mimic the funny things that people did. She was happy because she knew about God's love. One day, Bernadette saw Our Lady. Bernadette said Mary was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. Our Lady told Bernadette to tell all the people to be sorry for their sins. Mary told her that the people should say the rosary. Because Bernadette was so obedient, she did exactly what Our Lady asked her to do. Now Bernadette is in Heaven with Jesus and his mother.

Are you too little to say the rosary? Of course not! Mary gave us the rosary to remind us to love and honor Jesus always. Do you have a rosary of your own? You can use the picture below to say the rosary in a way just for little children to show Mary you love her and her son Jesus. Click and print the picture below (it might take a few seconds to show up):

Put your finger on the cross. Pray, "God, you are three persons - Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I love you and will always try to be good." On the brown beads, say "Jesus, I love you." On the colored beads, say "Mary, I love you." On the picture of Mary, say "Mary, please help me and all the children of the world."
